Studies show that a majority of men have felt insecure about the size of their penis at some point in their life. Approximately 2/3 of men, in fact, have had concerns at some point and for half of men it’s an ongoing concern1. Average Penis Length and Girth
The average size of a man’s penis is actually smaller than most people think. The average flaccid penis length is about 3.6 inches and the average flaccid penis girth is 3.7 inches. An erect penis however is obviously slightly larger. The average increase in the size of a penis between flaccid and erect is generally one to one and a half inches. This is a good rule of thumb. More specifically, the average erect penis length is about 5.2 inches and the average erect penis girth is about 4.6 inches2. So why then are so many men with average penis sizes concerned about their length and girth?
There are many different reasons men can be concerned with most of them starting before adult age or during puberty:
- Participation in school sports can involve communal showers which can put a particular focus on the penis. Additionally, the bathrooms and changing areas also create a space where the same can occur.
- Social media and the widespread availability of adult material. In many instances, adult material depicts penises much larger than average, however individuals may not realize this or may overlook this. This causes an insecurity on penis size that would likely not otherwise exist if it weren’t for this material.
